Conference statement
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Prof. Veljko Rogić birth, the conference honours his work and his outstanding contribution to modern Croatian geography.
The conference will take place in Krasno - Mt. Velebit, the historically important mountain centre above the small towns of Senj and Sv. Juraj in the Croatian Littoral region at the foot of Mt. Velebit, his home region and great inspiration for his lifelong research.
Prof. Rogić was born on 19 April 1925. He studied geography at the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb, where he obtained his doctorate in 1957 and his habilitation in 1960. He continued his studies in France and the USA. He joined the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Science in 1950, where he worked as a full professor from 1972 until his retirement in 1995; he was a professor emeritus after 2000. His area of expertise is the regional, historical and political geography of Croatia, in particular the concepts of region, geographical regionalisation, cultural areas and landscapes. His study on the process of shaping karst landscapes using the example of the Velebit coastal slope is the first work on the interdependence of traditional settlement, economic form and physiognomy of karst landscapes in our country.
Everyone knew Prof. Rogić as a truly learned and erudite man. His views, his way of thinking and seeing things and structures in the landscape in their development and change were unique and complex. His texts were rich, dense and above all multi-layered, reflecting geography in all its complexity.
The title of the conference therefore aims to honour Prof. Rogić's approach and the true nature and uniqueness of geography on the one hand, and to celebrate the complexity of contemporary geography and embrace all the newness it brings with it on the other.
The aim of the conference is to give new impetus to the study of Professor Rogić's works and the geography of his time. It is open to participants with a background in geography, historical and political geography, geographical regionalisation, cultural spaces and karst landscapes, concepts of the region and cultural heritage. Therefore, the conference is primarily dedicated to the work and legacy of Prof Rogić, but is also open to all new research in all areas of geography.
